Living organisms are classified for the following key reasons:
- Easy Identification: Classification provides a systematic way to identify any known organism by comparing its characteristics with those of a known group.
- Study Convenience: It is impossible to study every single organism. By grouping them based on similarities, the study of one or two organisms in a group gives us sufficient information about the characteristics of the entire group.
- Understanding Relationships: Classification helps us understand the interrelationships and evolutionary connections among different groups of organisms.
- Discovering New Organisms: It helps in placing a newly discovered organism into its correct group, making its study easier.
- Universal System: It provides a standardized, universal system so that scientists all over the world can communicate about organisms without confusion.
Classification systems are dynamic and change over time due to several factors:
- Advancement in Science: Our understanding of organisms improves with advancements in technology and scientific fields. For example, the invention of the powerful microscope allowed us to study cell structure, and advancements in biochemistry and genetics help us understand molecular-level relationships.
- New Discoveries: As new species of organisms are discovered, existing classification systems may need to be modified to accommodate them correctly.
- Changing Criteria: Initially, classifications were based only on morphological (external) features. Later, internal anatomy, embryology, and cellular structure were considered. Today, evolutionary relationships (phylogeny) based on DNA sequencing are a major criterion.
Therefore, as our knowledge grows, classification systems are refined to become more natural and scientific, reflecting the true relationships between organisms.
To classify the people I meet often, I could use various non-scientific, practical criteria based on observable features and interactions. This is analogous to how early classification was done based on morphology.
- Family/Relationship: Parents, siblings, cousins, etc.
- Social Circle: Friends, classmates, teachers, neighbours.
- Geographical Location: People from my city, state, or country.
- Appearance: Based on features like height (tall/short), hair colour, etc.
- Age Group: Children, teenagers, adults, elderly.
- Profession: Doctors, engineers, teachers, etc.
This shows that classification is a basic human instinct to organize and make sense of the world, whether for people or for organisms.
A key is a taxonomical aid used for the identification of plants and animals based on their similarities and dissimilarities. It works in a systematic and analytical manner.
- Based on Contrasting Characters: Keys are based on a pair of contrasting statements or characters, called a **couplet**.
- Process of Elimination: The user must choose one of the two statements in the couplet that matches the organism. This choice leads to the acceptance of one statement and the rejection of the other.
- Leads to Identification: Each statement in the key is called a **lead**. By following the leads sequentially, the user narrows down the possibilities and eventually arrives at the correct taxon (family, genus, or species) for the organism.
- Analytical in Nature: Because it involves a step-by-step process of choice, a key is considered analytical. Separate taxonomic keys are required for each taxonomic category like family, genus, and species.
Taxonomic hierarchy is the arrangement of various taxonomic categories in descending order, starting from Kingdom. This system is also known as the Linnaean hierarchy.
